Overview
Where the available water supply cannot meet the pressure and flow that a sprinkler/standpipe design demands — typically in high-rise and large buildings — a fire pump set provides it. Governed by NFPA 20.
Pump types
- Electric-motor pump — driven from a reliable power supply
- Diesel-engine pump — independent of the electrical grid, for reliability/backup
- Jockey (pressure-maintenance) pump — holds system pressure so the main pump doesn’t cycle on minor leaks (it is not a fire pump)
Pump room
Houses the pumps, controllers and jockey pump in a fire-rated, ventilated, drained space kept above 4°C, with the separation and access required by NFPA 20.
Standards
Designed to NFPA 20; the requirement is driven by hydraulic need (not building height alone) and approved by UAE Civil Defence.

Frequently asked questions
Why have both an electric and a diesel pump?
The diesel pump guarantees operation if electrical power fails — it is about reliability and redundancy, not better suppression.
Is the jockey pump a backup fire pump?
No — the jockey pump only maintains system pressure; it is not sized for firefighting flow.
