Passive Fire Protection

Built-in protection that contains a fire and buys time — fire-stopping of penetrations, intumescent products and fire-rated cables.

Fire-stopping of wall penetrations

Overview

Passive fire protection is built into the structure to contain fire and smoke, complementing active systems. It works without moving parts.

What it includes

  • Fire-stopping — restores the fire rating of walls/floors where cables, pipes and ducts penetrate them
  • Intumescent products — expand under heat to seal gaps and protect structural steel
  • Fire-rated (circuit-integrity) cables — keep fire pumps, alarms, smoke fans and emergency lighting running during a fire (tested to BS 6387 / IEC 60331)

Where it’s used

Service penetrations through rated walls and floors, riser shafts, around structural steel, and on all life-safety power/control wiring.

Standards

Installed to NFPA 80 / relevant standards; fire-rated cables tested to BS 6387 and IEC 60331.

Frequently asked questions

What is fire-stopping?

Sealing the gaps where cables/pipes/ducts pass through fire-rated walls and floors, so the wall’s fire rating is restored and fire/smoke can’t spread through the opening.
